UNC Football: Week Six Schedule Report for 2022 Opponents
By Mark DeMott
Most college football teams have hit the midway point of the season, as we check in to see how the UNC football team’s opponents fared in Week Six.
We are now halfway through the regular season and the North Carolina Tar Heels are 5-1 and in first place in the ACC Coastal Division.
With Saturday’s road win at Miami, the Tar Heels are currently in the driver’s seat to get to Charlotte as the only team in the Coastal without a conference loss.
Outside of Miami, there were plenty of other important results across the nation in Week Six, as we take a look at this week’s schedule report.
Up Next
@ Duke Blue Devils
The Blue Devils have had a surprisingly good start to this season, but they couldn’t overcome a slow start in Atlanta against Georgia Tech on Saturday.
After trailing by two scores late in the fourth quarter, Duke rallied to tie the game and send it to overtime. However, after a Georgia Tech made field goal on their drive, Blue Devil kicker Charlie Ham missed a 52-yarder to end the game.
Even with the loss, Duke remains a contender in the Coastal, and a Tar Heel victory next week would be huge for their Coastal Division hopes. If the Heels can win in Durham, they will stand at 3-0 and lead the division headed into another bye week.
Result: 23-20 Loss (OT) @ Georgia Tech (4-2, 1-1 in ACC)
Looking Ahead
Pittsburgh Panthers
The Panthers bounced back from last weekend’s loss to Georgia Tech with a victory against Virginia Tech on Saturday.
Pitt’s defense struggled against a subpar Hokie offense, but running back Israel Abanikanda rushed for 320 yards and six touchdowns.
The Panthers have a bye next week prior to road trips to Louisville and Chapel Hill.
Result: 45-29 Win vs Virginia Tech (4-2, 1-1 in ACC)
@ Virginia Cavaliers
The Cavaliers’ rough start to the season continued on Saturday.
Louisville outscored UVA 34-7 in the final three quarters after falling behind by ten in the first. They did this without their starting quarterback, Malik Cunningham.
Virginia is already 0-3 in ACC play and will need a major turnaround to reach a bowl game.
Result: 34-17 Loss vs Louisville (2-4, 0-3 in ACC)
@ Wake Forest Demon Deacons
Wake cruised past Army on Saturday to finish their non-conference slate.
The Deacs are up to 14th in the AP Poll and have a bye next week.
UNC’s road trip to Winston-Salem on November 12th looks like the toughest remaining game on the Tar Heels’ schedule.
Result: 45-10 Win vs Army (5-1, 1-1 in ACC)
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
The Yellow Jackets have turned their season around after firing Geoff Collins.
After upsetting Pittsburgh last week, the Jackets won again as underdogs vs Duke this weekend.
The Jackets have a bye this week and join the UNC football program as the only teams in the Coastal with two conference victories to this point.
Result: 23-20 Win (OT) vs Duke (2-1, 3-3 in ACC)
NC State Wolfpack
The Wolfpack bounced back from last week’s loss to Clemson with a narrow victory over FSU in Raleigh.
FSU took a 17-3 lead into halftime, but State’s defense shut them out in the second half as the Pack pulled off the comeback win. They sealed the game with an interception of Seminole QB Jordan Travis in the endzone in the final minute.
The Pack head north to take on undefeated Syracuse next week.
Result: 19-17 Win vs Florida State (5-1, 1-1 in ACC)
Looking Back
Florida A&M Rattlers
The Rattlers extended their winning streak to four games with a win over SCSU this weekend.
Result: 20-14 Win @ South Carolina State (4-2, 2-1 in SWAC)
Appalachian State Mountaineers
The ‘Neers have lost some steam ever since College Gameday went to Boone.
They lost at Texas State this weekend and currently have a losing record in Sun Belt play.
Result: 36-24 Loss @ Texas State (3-3, 1-2 in Sun Belt)
Georgia State Panthers
The Panthers have now won two in a row after opening the season 0-4.
They will carry some momentum into the bye week after beating Georgia State on Saturday.
After the bye, they will face App State in a matchup between UNC’s Week 2 and Week 3 opponents.
Result: 41-33 vs Georgia Southern (2-4, 1-1 in Sun Belt)
Notre Dame Fighting Irish
The Irish were back in action this week, and are starting to pick up steam, defeating a ranked BYU squad in Las Vegas on Saturday.
The Irish offense looks better with Drew Pyne under center and they have three very winnable games coming up before a showdown with Clemson on November 5th.
Don’t be shocked if Notre Dame rights the ship and winds up having a good season.
Result: 28-20 Win vs BYU (3-2)
Virginia Tech Hokies
The Hokies are a work in progress in Brent Pry’s first year, losing at Pittsburgh this weekend.
They don’t look like Coastal Division contenders and need to improve quickly if they want to reach a bowl game this season.
Result: 45-29 Loss @ Pittsburgh (2-4, 1-2 in ACC)
