This publication has only one player ranked above the UNC football quarterback in their weekly Quarterback Power Rankings.

Drake Maye continues to turn himself into a household name nationally.  The Tar Heels quarterback is off to an outstanding start to his redshirt freshman season, and people around the country are beginning to recognize what he’s done thus far.

Last week, I wrote a piece about how CBS Sports ranked Maye as the third-best QB in the nation  through four weeks.  Well, after an injury sidelined Alabama quarterback and reigning Heisman Trophy Winner Bryce Young for much of their game, along with Maye putting up over 400 total yards and 5 total touchdowns, he has leapfrogged the Crimson Tide quarterback and is now ranked second in this week’s edition.

The only player that CBS currently ranks ahead of the Huntersville, NC native is Ohio State quarterback (and current Heisman Trophy betting favorite) CJ Stroud.

It shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to anyone that Maye’s name is trending around the nation.  His 19 touchdown passes are tied for first in the nation, his 1,594 passing yards are good for seventh in the nation, and he has also rushed for 255 yards and three touchdowns.

With numbers like this, Tar Heel fans are beginning to wonder if Maye could end his season in New York City as a Heisman Trophy Finalist.  Of course, for this to happen he will need some help from his teammates, as the players that make it to New York are almost always on teams that have won a ton of games (and usually their conference/division).

We will see if Drake and the Tar Heels offense can continue to impress this Saturday as they head to South Beach for a showdown with Miami.
