UNC Football: Antonio Williams Joins Giants Practice Squad
By Aaron Conrad
A very interesting week for former UNC Football player Antonio Williams. He was released by the New York Giants but has re-signed with the Giants practice squad.
Former UNC football running back Antonio Williams has had quite an interesting week with the New York Giants. On Tuesday Williams was waived by the Giants a day after they lost to the Dallas Cowboys at home 23-13.
Williams was used sparingly with the Giants only getting two snaps on offense and zero touches. He was used on special teams.
By Thursday, the Giants resigned Williams to the practice squad and released offensive tackle Roy Mbaeteka.
Williams spent his first two years of college with The Ohio State University (2016-2017). During his freshman season for the Buckeyes, he averaged 4.7 yards on 6 carries. He averaged 5.1 yards on 57 carries during his sophomore year in Columbus. He transferred to the Tar Heel for the 2018 season and averaged 5.9 yards on 91 attempts. In his final season (2019) for the Heels, he averaged 6.5 yards on 48 carries.
For his college career (combined) he averaged 5.8 yards on 202 total attempts.
Williams was undrafted in the 2020 draft but signed with the Buffalo Bills as a free agent on May 8, 2020. He was waived by the Bills on August 5, 2020, but re-signed on August 30, 2020. On January 27, 2022, Williams signed a futures contract with the New York Giants.
During his time with the Tar Heels, Williams started seven games in his first season and finished as the team’s second-leading rusher. During his senior year, Williams had to share duties with Javonte Williams and Michael Carter.
We will continue to follow the career of Williams and share updates as they become available.
