The UNC football quarterback said something at today’s press conference that will surely upset plenty of Wolfpack fans.
UNC and NC State fans do not often agree, regardless of what is being discussed. While UNC football fans have quickly fallen in love with their redshirt freshman gun-slinger Drake Maye, he made sure today that Wolfpack fans will hate him before he ever takes a snap against their team.
At today’s press conference, Maye explained that he chose North Carolina because he didn’t want to miss out on an opportunity to play for the “home state.” What he said afterward is something that State fans will not be forgetting anytime soon:
#UNC QB Drake Maye: “I didn’t want to miss out on the home state… growing up in Carolina, you’re gonna be a Carolina fan. Some people may say State, but really people who go to State just can’t get into Carolina…” pic.twitter.com/z7zVHvFEbI

Maye has since apologized for his remarks, but NC State fans will certainly not be forgetting his words anytime soon.
I made a remark today about NC State, and I want to apologize. I was answering a question about playing in-state and said something I shouldn’t have. I said it as a joke but it was inappropriate. I feel bad and need to do a better job representing our program and this University.

The “Wolfpack Nation” was already not too fond of the Maye family, given what Drake’s brother, Luke, did to their team during his basketball games at PNC Arena.

NC State fans are tired of hearing about how they are the “little brother” to UNC, yet it’s hard to argue against that given how much more success the Tar Heels have had across nearly all sports for a long time.
One sport where the ‘Pack has had recent success against UNC is football. They have beaten Carolina in 4 of the last 6 and 10 of the last 15 meetings, including last year’s miraculous comeback in Raleigh.
With NC State ranked in the Top 15 and both teams currently undefeated, the season finale between the two teams in Chapel Hill is going to be a highly anticipated matchup. While both teams have plenty of business to take care of before then, the Black Friday showdown just got even more intriguing.
