UNC Football: Week Three Schedule Report
By Mark DeMott
Week Three of the college football season is in the books, as we check out how the teams on the UNC football schedule fared below.
The UNC football team was able to regroup, rest, and hopefully get healthy during their bye this weekend.
While the Heels were not in action, there were some exciting games across the country.
We take a look at how the teams on UNC’s schedule fared below:
Up Next
Notre Dame Fighting Irish
The Fighting Irish were finally able to pick up a win and earn Marcus Freeman’s first victory as head coach.
Following last week’s upset loss to Marshall, Notre Dame trailed again in the fourth quarter against California. This time, quarterback Drew Pyne was able to make enough plays to lead the Irish to a victory.
Cal nearly converted a Hail Mary to tie the game as time expired, but they were ultimately unable to pull off the upset.
The Irish will be looking to make a statement and even their record in Chapel Hill on Saturday, in a game that UNC could be favored to win.
Result: 24-17 Win vs California (1-2)
Looking Ahead
Virginia Tech Hokies
The Hokies had a comfortable win over FCS opponent, Wofford, on Saturday.
They will face West Virginia on Thursday night in Blacksburg, in what should be a great environment.
After that, the Hokies will get a couple of extra days to prepare for their visit to Chapel Hill on October 1st.
Result: 27-7 Win vs Wofford (2-1,1-0 in ACC)
@ Miami Hurricanes
The Canes missed an opportunity to make a statement and potentially shoot up the rankings with an underwhelming performance in College Station.
Miami didn’t score a touchdown against the Aggies, and missed out on what would have been a big win for the ACC.
If they can handle business against Middle Tennessee State next week, they will be 3-1 when UNC comes to South Beach.
Result:17-9 Loss @ Texas A&M (2-1, 0-0 in ACC)
@ Duke Blue Devils
The Blue Devils took care of business against NCA&T and set up one of the more intriguing games in the country next weekend.
Undefeated Duke will travel to the Midwest for a showdown with the undefeated Kansas Jayhawks, yes in a football game.
College basketball’s blue bloods have had tons of success on the gridiron thus far, with UNC, Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, UCLA, Syracuse, and Indiana all undefeated thus far.
Result: 49-20 Win vs North Carolina A&T (3-0, 0-0 in ACC)
Pittsburgh Panthers
The Panthers bounced back from last weekend’s overtime loss with a quality win at Western Michigan.
Pitt has a favorable schedule in the coming weeks, hosting Rhode Island and Georgia Tech in their next two contests.
Result: 34-13 Win @ Western Michigan (2-1, 0-0 in ACC)
@ Virginia Cavaliers
Virginia has not been very impressive through the first few weeks of the season.
The Cavs needed a game-winning field goal as time expired to beat Old Dominion (which Virginia Tech was unable to do) on Saturday.
They will open ACC play on Friday night on the road against one of the league’s surprise teams thus far, Syracuse.
Result:16-14 Win vs Old Dominion (2-1, 0-0 in ACC)
@ Wake Forest Demon Deacons
Wake Forest nearly suffered a devastating home loss against the Liberty Flames on Saturday.
The Demon Deacons were able to stop what would have been a game-winning two-point conversion in the final minutes of their shootout victory.
Surviving against Liberty sets up one of the biggest games in Winston-Salem in recent memory next weekend, as the still undefeated Deacs will host ACC favorite Clemson.
Result: 37-36 Win vs Liberty (3-0, 0-0 in ACC)
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
The Yellow Jackets were embarrassed on their home field against Ole Miss on Saturday.
They did not score a point against the Rebels and appear to be headed for the bottom of the Coastal Division unless things get better quickly.
The schedule doesn’t get any easier, with road games against UCF and Pitt coming up.
Result: 42-0 Loss vs Ole Miss (1-2, 0-1 in ACC)
NC State Wolfpack
The Wolfpack defense was impressive in a quality win against previously unbeaten Texas Tech on Saturday night.
NC State built a 20-0 lead and was in control throughout their thirteen-point victory.
If the Pack can avoid an upset against UConn next week, they will be undefeated for what many have billed as the ACC game of the year, when they travel to Clemson on October 1st.
Result: 27-14 Win vs Texas Tech (3-0, 0-0 in ACC)
Looking Back
Florida A&M Rattlers
The Rattlers had a bye this week as well. They return to SWAC action next week against Alabama A&M.
Result: BYE (1-2, 0-1 in SWAC)
Appalachian State Mountaineers
App State has been the most exciting team to follow thus far in the college football season.
The ‘Neers have played in arguably the craziest game (vs UNC), the biggest upset (@ Texas A&M), and now added the wildest play of the year thus far.
It looked like the College Gameday visit to App State was going to have a sour ending until QB Chase Brice’s prayer was answered with a Hail Mary as time expired to beat Troy on Saturday afternoon.
The Heels’ road win against App State could continue to look more impressive as the season goes on.
Result: 32-28 Win vs Troy (2-1, 1-0 in Sun Belt)
Georgia State Panthers
The Panthers can’t seem to catch a break, as they dropped a home game to Charlotte to fall to 0-3 on the season.
After taking a six-point lead with under two minutes left, the Panthers gave up a game-winning touchdown with seventeen seconds left in the game.
They will look to get their first win of the season against undefeated Coastal Carolina on Thursday night.
Result: 42-41 Loss vs Charlotte (0-3, 0-0 in Sun Belt)
