With Maye under center, the UNC football program has won road contests in back-to-back weeks for the first time since the 2016 season.

When Drake Maye flipped his commitment from the University of Alabama to North Carolina, the  UNC football program and its fans all but knew they had Sam Howell’s successor.

What we didn’t know is that Maye would quickly earn himself a ranking among the top quarterbacks in the nation.

According to CBS Sports’ Tom Fornelli, Tar Heel quarterback Drake Maye is ranked No. 4 in the College Football QB Power Rankings. The redshirt freshman sits behind reigning Heisman Trophy winner Bryce Young, C.J. Stroud, and Caleb Williams on the list.

Maye is the youngest quarterback on the top-10 list and is rated ahead of standouts Stetson Bennett, Dillon Gabriel, and Tyler Van Dyke.

Through his first three games as the starter under center, Maye has surpassed all expectations, throwing for 930 yards, 11 touchdowns, and just one interception. The Huntersville, NC native has impressed on the ground much like his predecessor, amassing 146 rushing yards and a touchdown on 26 carries.

Although North Carolina is one of just 13 programs to play in three games so far, Maye leads the nation in both passing yards and touchdown passes.

With a 3-0 record, Maye and the Tar Heels will look to improve to 4-0 for the first time since 1997 when they host the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Sept. 24.

Will Drake Maye continue his impressive start as the UNC football program heads toward ACC play?
