Former UNC Football standout quarterback Mitch Trubisky gets the win in his debut for the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday.

That was wild! What a game.

As if replacing a future Hall of Fame quarterback wasn’t enough, former UNC football standout Mitch Trubisky had to lead the Pittsburgh Steelers to an overtime victory against the division rival Cincinnati Bengals. Trubisky wasn’t perfect but he was enough. He was what the Steelers needed to pull out a 23-20 win in Cincinnati.

For the game, Trubisky was 21-38 for 194 yards and a touchdown. The numbers weren’t perfect, but it was clear that the game plan was simple in game one. The Steelers didn’t need Trubisky to be Ben Roethlisberger, they needed him to effectively run the offense and not make mistakes. It is hard to judge after one game, but based on five quarters of football (the game went to overtime), it would appear he did just that.

Pittsburgh pulled out the victory in a wild overtime game. The Steelers provided Trubisky’s comments in the postgame press conference on their Twitter account.

Trubisky was drafted by the Chicago Bears with the second overall pick in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft. He made his first NFL career start on October 9, 2017, and spent his first four seasons with the organization. From there, the former Tar Heel served as Josh Allen’s backup for the Buffalo Bills last season and proceeded to sign a two-year contract with the Steelers on March 17, 2022.

He began his career with the UNC football program as a redshirt in 2013 and was a backup to starting quarterback Marquise Williams for the 2014 and 2015 seasons. He officially took over as the starting quarterback during his junior season in 2016. He went on to earn third-team All-ACC honors after recording 3,748 passing yards, 30 touchdowns, and just six interceptions that season.
