UNC Baseball: Zac Gallen Scoreless Innings Streak Ends
By Aaron Conrad
Former UNC baseball standout and current Arizona Diamondback pitcher Zac Gallen saw his scoreless innings streak end at an incredible 44 1/3 innings.
Zac Gallen’s streak has ended and what a streak it was.
The former UNC baseball standout right-handed pitcher threw 44 1/3 scoreless innings on before giving up a run on Sunday. Despite the streak ending, Gallen struck out eleven batters and won for the seventh time in his last eight starts. Gallen’s record for the season sits at 12-2, as he’s been one of the few bright spots for the Arizona Diamondbacks this season.
The 44 1/3 scoreless innings streak set a club record for the Diamondbacks, the record which was previously held by Brandon Webb (42 1/3).
Gallen was with the Tar Heels for three seasons from 2014-2016. He finished the 2016 season with a 5-6 record and a 2.68 ERA over 90.2 innings pitched. He walked just 21 batters over that span while striking out 95 hitters.
After becoming a key component of the Tar Heels rotation, Gallen was drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in the third round of the 2016 Major League Baseball draft. He made his major league debut three years later with the Miami Marlins on June 20, 2019.
He was traded to the Diamondbacks on July 31, 2019, and has found success in the desert. He finished his first year in Arizona going 2-3 with a 2.89 ERA. In 2020 he followed it up with a 3-2 record and a 2.75 ERA.
Gallen’s name has even been mentioned for the National League Cy Young Award after posting an 8-0 record in 10 starts with a 0.97 ERA. For the season, he is 12-2 with a minimal 2.50 ERA. It is safe to say he has found a home in Arizona’s rotation.
Remarkable numbers in a difficult season for the Diamondbacks. Congratulations Zac on a terrific season.
