The UNC football standout has impressed early in his career, leading the Tar Heels to their first road victory since Dec. 12, 2020, at Miami.

After beginning the 2022 season in style against Florida A&M, starting quarterback Drake Maye continued his dominance under center, guiding the Tar Heels to a 63-61 road victory against Appalachian State.

The redshirt freshman completed 24 of 36 passes through the air, tallying 352 yards and four touchdowns. On the ground, Maye excelled, compiling 76 yards and a touchdown on 12 carries.

Maye’s performance earned himself the Maxwell Player of the Week award, an honor given to top overall performance on offense, defense, or special teams.

Through two games, Maye has connected on 53 of 72 passes, throwing for 646 yards and nine touchdowns. The Charlotte native has also been successful on the ground, using his legs to accumulate 192 rushing yards.

It’s still very early in the season, but Maye has put himself among the list of names actively in the mix for the Heisman Trophy award. He’ll certainly have to keep up this production throughout the entire season, but it’s notable to hear the redshirt freshman is earning so much early recognition for his stellar play on the football field through the first two weeks of play.

Maye will lead the Tar Heels into their second consecutive road game on Saturday when they look to go 3-0 in Atlanta, as they take on Georgia State at noon.
