Former UNC football standout quarterback Mitch Trubisky has been named the starting quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Mitch Trubisky, the former UNC football quarterback and current NFL veteran, has officially been named the starting quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.

In addition to being listed as the team’s starter under center, Trubisky was named one of the five team captains in his first season with the Steelers.

Trubisky was drafted by the Chicago Bears with the second overall pick in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft. He made his first NFL career start on October 9, 2017, and spent his first four seasons with the organization. From there, the former Tar Heel served as Josh Allen’s backup for the Buffalo Bills last season and proceeded to sign a two-year contract with the Steelers on March 17, 2022.

Entering training camp, Trubisky came in as the expected starter. However, there was some late speculation that Kenny Pickett might get the nod after making a strong push during the preseason. Mason Rudolph is currently listed as the backup to Trubisky, while Pickett currently sits third on the depth chart.

The Mentor, Ohio native will have large shoes, as he has earned the first opportunity to replace future Hall of Famer Ben Roethlisberger, who was a six-time Pro Bowler, and two-time Super Bowl championships.

Trubisky began his career with the Tar Heels as a redshirt in 2013 and was a backup to starting quarterback Marquise Williams for the 2014 and 2015 seasons. He officially took over as the starting quarterback during his junior season in 2016. He went on to earn third-team All-ACC honors after recording 3,748 passing yards, 30 touchdowns, and just six interceptions that season.

After a season as the backup in Buffalo, it is great to see Trubisky once again get his chance at the starting quarterback job with a strong franchise like the Pittsburgh Steelers.
