UNC Football: Bears Release Wide Receiver Dazz Newsome
The former UNC football standout will hit the free agent market and search for his next home in the National Football League.
As part of the roster cuts needed to meet the 80-man requirement, the Chicago Bears released second-year wideout and former UNC football standout Dazz Newsome on Tuesday.
Newsome spent just one season in Chicago after being selected in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft.
The former All-ACC selection appeared in three regular-season games for the Bears, recording two receptions for 23 yards and six punt returns for 75 yards.
Heading into his sophomore campaign, Newsome appeared to be on the outside looking in after Chicago acquired a handful of wide receivers in the offseason, including Byron Pringle and N’Keal Harry.
Despite the logjam at the receiver spot, the Hampton, Virginia native saw playing time in the Bears’ two preseason contests. Newsome recorded one catch for 13 yards and a touchdown in the opener and one reception for 14 yards against the Seahawks on Thursday.
The UNC football record book is littered with Newsome’s name, as he exited Chapel Hill as one of the most successful receivers in program history.
Newsome currently ranks third in program history in career receptions (188), fifth in receiving yards (2,435), and tied for seventh in career touchdowns (18).
With still a bit of time before the regular season kicks off, Newsome could possibly be brought in by a team in need of some wide receiving depth. As teams continue to trim their rosters, the hope is that someone will find a roster spot to bring him into the mix.
