The UNC football head coach spoke about his great relationship with head basketball coach Hubert Davis, taking a shot at Kentucky in the process.

This past week, Kentucky athletics was in the news for all of the wrong reasons.  Men’s basketball Coach John Calipari referred to Kentucky as a “basketball school”, which was not taken well by Wildcat football coach Mark Stoops.

Here is what the feud between the two coaches looked like on Twitter:

This argument prompted social media chaos for Wildcat fans, leading to some fans reminding Calipari that the Kentucky football team has never lost a game to St. Peters.

North Carolina and Kentucky are two of the biggest blue blood programs in the sport of college basketball.  The Wildcats are arguably the Tar Heels’ biggest rival outside of the ACC, and the two programs have had plenty of classic showdowns on the hardwood including this classic from the 2017 NCAA Tournament:

While these two schools don’t consider each other huge rivals on the gridiron, that didn’t stop UNC football coach Mack Brown from taking a shot at Kentucky this afternoon.  Brown was a guest on SEC Network’s “The Paul Finebaum Show” and he took a jab at the ‘Cats after being introduced by his former ESPN colleague.  Here is what Mack had to say as he joined the show:

"“May I say that our basketball coach Hubert Davis and I are getting along wonderfully, we can start with that, and get that out of the way….  Hubert was at practice the other day and we are great friends and really enjoy each other.”"

North Carolina is known as a school where all of the athletic teams have good relationships with each other.  This is a culture that is best illustrated by former UNC basketball coach Roy Williams, who was (and still is) known to spend plenty of his personal time attending other Carolina sporting events.

There is no doubt that Tar Heel fans take pride in the fact that there is encouragement and support between the different athletic programs on campus.  It has been well documented that Hubert Davis has been following in Williams’ footsteps in that respect.

While there may be some drama between athletic programs in Lexington this coming year,  UNC fans can rest assured that Carolina’s football and basketball teams will be cheering on each other throughout their respective seasons.
