Former UNC basketball point guard Nate Britt appears to have finished his playing career overseas and will return to college basketball as the Director of Player Development for the Stanford Cardinal.

Nate Britt had a successful college career as a player for the UNC basketball program and is now transitioning to the coaching side of things. The former Tar Heel will take his talents to the west coast and join the coaching staff for the Stanford Cardinals.

Stanford finished last season with a 16-16 record and ended the year in 9th place in the PAC-12.  Britt’s new boss is one Tar Heel fans should be familiar with. Jerod Haase, who played for Roy Williams at Kansas and spent over ten years as Williams’ assistant at Kansas and North Carolina, is the current head coach of the Cardinals.

Britt has spent the last few years playing professionally overseas.  The Maryland native spent time as a pro in England, Argentina, Cyprus, Germany, and the Netherlands, averaging double-figure scoring in four of those five stops.

Prior to his professional career, Britt spent four years getting consistent minutes for the Tar Heels.  While he was not a regular starter toward the end of his career at Carolina, Britt made a big impact off the bench on UNC’s 2016 and 2017 Final Four teams.

As the primary reserve at the guard position behind Joel Berry and Theo Pinson, Britt played a calming role as an experienced decision-maker on the 2017 National Championship team.  The 6’1″ guard made contributions throughout the redemption tour, highlighted by a key stretch late in the first half of the Final Four victory over Oregon.

Another thing most Tar Heel fans will recall about Britt’s career is that he famously switched his shooting stroke from left-handed to right-handed after his freshman season at Carolina.  The former point guard clearly understands the ability to make adjustments and will look to share his knowledge and experience with the Stanford team this season.

Known as an unselfish point guard who was trusted by Roy Williams in key situations throughout his playing career, Britt has the pedigree to make him a successful coach.  We’d like to wish Nate good luck in his new gig at Stanford next season, and can’t help but wonder if the coaching route might lead him back to Chapel Hill one day.
