UNC Baseball: Seattle Mariners Select Brandon Schaeffer
By Mark DeMott
The UNC baseball left-handed pitcher is the fourth member of this year’s squad selected in the MLB Draft.
The second pitcher and fourth player from this year’s UNC baseball team has been drafted as Brandon Schaeffer was selected by the Seattle Mariners in the eighteenth round with the 546th overall pick.
Schaeffer started eighteen contests for Carolina this season and posted a 7-3 record with a 3.75 ERA and 71 strikeouts in 96 innings. This was his first season playing for the Tar Heels as he spent his first three college seasons at WVU Potomac State College, a JUCO located in West Virginia.
The Pennsylvania native racked up the accolades in his first season in Chapel Hill, leading the Diamond Heels in wins and innings pitched. He also earned a spot on the All-ACC Academic Team.
The junior rose to the occasion on the biggest stages for the Diamond Heels, best illustrated by a complete-game shutout of regular season champion and eventual fourth-overall seed Virginia Tech in the ACC Tournament. This performance earned Schaeffer a spot on the All-ACC Tournament team. He also appeared in three of the Tar Heels NCAA Tournament games, allowing six earned runs in over thirteen innings of work.
Schaeffer became the fourth UNC baseball player taken in this year’s draft, joining Danny Serretti, Davis Palermo, and Angel Zarate.
While he does still have college eligibility remaining, Brandon Schaeffer made sure that he left his mark on Carolina baseball if this was indeed his only season in Chapel Hill.
