The UNC women’s lacrosse team is set to take on Boston College for the NCAA Championship on Sunday afternoon.

The top-seeded and No. 1-ranked North Carolina women’s lacrosse team will take on the No. 3 seed Boston College Golden Eagles in the 2022 NCAA Championship Game on Sunday afternoon in Baltimore, Maryland. This is the Tar Heels’ fifth NCAA Championship appearance in program history and first since 2016. They are vying for their third national title, having won it all in 2013 and 2016.

The Tar Heels enter the game with an unblemished record of 21-0 on the season — their second-longest streak in program history — while the Eagles are 19-3 and poised to upset the favorite. The teams met twice this season, with the Tar Heels winning both. The first match was a 16-15 final in Chesnut Hill and the second match a 16-9 final in the ACC Tournament final in Chapel Hill.

North Carolina has only lost twice in its last 58 games, both losses coming at the hands of Boston College in the NCAA Tournament (2019 and 2021 semifinals). Despite the Tar Heels’ lack of success against the Eagles in NCAA Tournament play, they lead the all-time series by a tally of 20 wins and just six losses. They’re certainly familiar with each other, having met twice in each of the last five seasons.

The Tar Heels defied the odds in the NCAA semifinal round when they came back from eight goals down to defeat fourth-seeded Northwestern 15-14 on Friday. As impressive as that was, they’ll want to get off to a better start in Sunday’s decisive season finale. If they can pull off one more victory, they’ll finish the season ranked No. 1 for the third time in the past decade.

The game begins at noon EST and will be aired on ESPN.
