UNC baseball advances to ACC Tournament title game
The UNC baseball team advanced to the ACC Tournament title game with another impressive performance on Saturday afternoon.
Following an unbelievable performance on the mound from Brandon Schaeffer on Friday night that helped the Tar Heels beat the top-seeded Virginia Tech Hokies by a final score of 10-0, North Carolina took care of business against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the ACC Tournament semifinals on Saturday, winning 7-2 in Charlotte.
The Tar Heels will now play in the ACC Championship Game for the 13th time in program history — they’ve won in seven of their previous 12 appearances — after rolling off 14 victories in their last 16 games.
The game was tied at two runs apiece before a five-run outburst in the eighth and ninth innings. That rally put the Tar Heels in complete control of the 16th-ranked Fighting Irish, 35-14, who will now await the NCAA Tournament with hopes of advancing to the 2022 College World Series.
After Schaeffer pitched a nine-inning shutout all by himself just a day prior, five Tar Heels combined to give up just two runs on seven hits on Saturday. North Carolina finished the game with 13 hits, led by Mikey Madej’s four.
North Carolina has gone from a late-season bubble team to a squad that has solidified itself as an NCAA Tournament lock. The Tar Heels will now play the winner of the NC State and Pittsburgh game at noon EST on Sunday.
