UNC basketball head coach Hubert Davis was completely overcome with emotion following his team’s Elite Eight win over Saint Peter’s.

The North Carolina Tar Heels are headed to the Final Four for the first time since 2017 and it comes just one year after the retirement of former head coach and Hall-of-Famer Roy Williams.

Who’d have thought? I certainly wouldn’t have, at least not after blowout losses to Tennessee,  Kentucky, Miami, Wake Forest, and Duke, or following their unthinkable home defeat to Pittsburgh in mid-February.

But then they started picking up steam and looking a little bit better with each subsequent game. That momentum came to a head in their bout with Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium in Coach K’s final home game. That’s when they defeated the Blue Devils by 13 points and showed signs of life that we hadn’t really seen all season.

A couple of weeks later, following impressive wins against Marquette, Baylor, UCLA, and Cinderella sweetheart Saint Peter’s, they’re looking every bit the part of a Final Four team. Hubert Davis displayed all the emotion of his team’s up-and-down season in a postgame interview just moments after the win that propelled him to his first National Semifinal as a head coach.

It’s impossible to not like Hubert Davis if you’re a North Carolina fan. It’s nearly impossible not to like him if you’re simply a fan of the sport. A coach built in the mold of his former boss, the timeless and beloved Roy Williams, Davis gave every bit of the credit to his players rather than accept it as he was prompted to in the interview. In fact, he didn’t even want to be interviewed about his team’s success, as he instead suggested that his players answer the questions and embrace the spotlight.

But that’s just who Hubert Davis is. He’s a man that will accept the blame and reject the credit. He’s a man that honors those that came before him and goes to bat for those that play under him.

He’s apparently also a man that can win the big games and lead his team to the Final Four because that’s where they’re headed following their most improbable NCAA Tournament run in more than two decades.
