March Madness: Armando Bacot sets UNC single-season rebound record
March Madness has arrived and North Carolina’s Armando Bacot continues to add accolades to his brilliant junior season.
Armando Bacot has already put together one of the most impressive seasons that we’ve ever seen from a North Carolina post player, but he’s apparently not done yet.
Just a few minutes into the Tar Heels’ Round of 64 game against the Marquette Golden Eagles, Bacot pulled down his fifth rebound of the evening and became the program’s all-time single-season leader in rebounds. Brice Johnson held the previous record of 416 rebounds, which he recorded during his sensational senior season at North Carolina.
The biggest difference in the two players’ accomplishments is that it took Bacot just 34 games to match and pass the feat that it took Johnson 40 games to achieve. Johnson averaged 10.4 rebounds per game that season, while Bacot entered the Tar Heels’ first-round NCAA Tournament game with an average of 12.5 boards a night.
Bacot already holds the Tar Heels’ single-season record for double-doubles (25) and double-digit rebound games (26) and is just one board away from adding to each of those remarkable feats at halftime.
If the Tar Heels can put away the victory over Marquette — they lead 53-25 at halftime — then Bacot will have an opportunity to add to his records in a second-round game against the defending national champion Baylor Bears.
