The fifth-seeded North Carolina Tar Heels will take on the No. 12 seed Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks in the first round of the NCAA Tournament’s Greensboro Region.

Following a 23-6 season overall and a 13-5 mark in Atlantic Coast Conference play, the North Carolina Tar Heels women’s basketball program was awarded the 5-seed in the Greensboro Region of the 2022 NCAA Tournament.

The Tar Heels will take on the 12th-seeded Stephen F. Austin Ladyjacks of the Western Athletic Conference in Tuscon, Arizona on Saturday. The fourth-seeded Arizona Wildcats are hosting the first two rounds. If North Carolina advances beyond the round of 64, they’ll play the winner of the Arizona/UNLV game.

The battle-tested Tar Heels, who finished third in the ACC standings just four games behind one-loss NC State, will lean on their decisive rebounding edge and offensive versatility against a pesky and talented Stephen F. Austin squad that boasts tremendous depth — the Ladyjacks have nine players that average 11 or more minutes per game on the season.

The Tar Heels share a region with the tournament’s No. 1 overall seed, South Carolina, No. 2 Iowa, No. 3 Iowa State, and No. 6 Georgia. Fellow ACC member Miami was also placed in the Greensboro Region as the 8-seed.
