Former Tar Heels Walker Miller, King Rice lead Monmouth to victory
A pair of former Tar Heels are headed to the MAAC semifinal round following a tightly-contested victory on Thursday night.
Former Tar Heels Walker Miller and King Rice are on their way to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference semifinals following Monmouth’s 61-58 victory over Niagra on Thursday night.
Miller scored a game-high 17 points on a 7-for-15 shooting performance that included a 3-for-4 mark from three-point range. He added four assists, three rebounds, two blocks, two steals, and committed just one turnover in 35 minutes of play.
It was Miller’s seventh consecutive game scoring double-digit points and his 27th in 32 appearances with the Hawks. The fifth-year senior and former North Carolina reserve has been a big reason for Monmouth’s success this season, averaging nearly 15 points and six rebounds per game for King Rice’s squad.
Monmouth, now 20-12 on the season and battling for an automatic bid to this year’s NCAA Tournament, will advance to play the ninth-seeded Rider Broncs on Friday night. If they do come out victorious in Friday’s semifinal game, the Hawks will play the winner of the Quinnipiac and Saint Peter’s game to be played Friday night.
Miller, Rice, and the Hawks take on the Broncs at 6:00 p.m. EST and the game will be televised on ESPN News.
