Mack Brown and the UNC football program are getting ready for Spring practice as they hope 2022 will be a year where the program gets back on track. After a disappointing 2021 season that began with high expectations and ended with disappointment, UNC has a bit of an uphill battle this season.

But the future of the program is also a big storyline and that starts with recruiting.

Brown and the Tar Heels turned in a Top 10 class for the 2022 cycle this year and are likely to see the results of 2020 and 2021 classes on the field. However, the 2023 and 2024 classes are also in focus for the program.

One prospect that UNC has its eyes on is 2023 four-star edge rusher Desmond Umeozulu, a prospect out of Maryland that is seeing his recruitment pick up. Umeozulu has a total of 35 offers including from Clemson, Duke, Florida State, Boston College, Kentucky, Georgia, USC, Tennessee, and Texas among others. The Tar Heels have also offered Umeozulu and there appears to be a mutual interest.

In the latest piece on the recruit, a scouting report from Brian Dohn of 247Sports, it’s revealed that the talented Umeozulu visited North Carolina back in January:

"The 6-foot-5, 220-pound Umeozulu visited Penn State, North Carolina and Maryland in January, and he is slated to visit Ohio State, Clemson and Pittsburgh the first three weekends in March. His extensive offer list also includes Boston College, Duke, Georgia, Florida State, Kentucky, Michigan, Michigan State, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Rutgers, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Texas A&M, USC, Virginia, Virginia Tech, West Virginia Jackson State and Morgan State."

The Tar Heels do appear to be a legit contender in this recruitment and getting Umeozulu was a good start. It’s still early in the 2023 cycle but he’s a prospect we will keep our eyes on moving forward.
