UNC Basketball: Where Tar Heels stand in latest NET rankings
By Zack Pearson
The UNC basketball program finds itself in an interesting spot as February winds down and Selection Sunday looms. The Tar Heels stand at 20-8 overall and 12-5 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.
Yet, due to a poor Quad 1 record, the Tar Heels are on the bubble heading into this Saturday’s game at N.C. State. With a date against the Wolfpack, then Syracuse at home, and Duke on the road next week, UNC needs to stack wins and more importantly, avoid bad losses.
Going into Saturday’s game, the Tar Heels are a fringe top-40 team in the NET rankings and check in at No. 41 on Thursday, up one spot from No. 42.
Right now, UNC is 1-7 in Quad 1 wins (a major glare on the resume), 4-0 in Quad 2, 10-0 in Quad 3 and 5-1 in Quad 4. That lone loss in Quad 4 came at home against Pitt and if that didn’t happen, UNC is probably a little higher in the NET rankings. Avoiding bad losses like Saturday to NC State is key.
Another thing to look at for UNC are the Michigan Wolverines.
The Wolverines are another bubble team that needs to improve their resume and have some tough games coming up. After their win over Rutgers on Wednesday, the Wolverines are ranked No. 33 in the NET and need to get to No. 30 for UNC to earn another Quad 1 victory.
Other than that, UNC’s next chance to get a Quad 1 win would be the regular-season finale at Duke, a team that the Tar Heels lost by 20 earlier in the year. They could get the chance at another Quad 1 game in the ACC Tournament pending how the bracket develops.
Right now, UNC just needs to win as many games as they can and improve that NET.
