2022 UNC basketball recruit Tyler Nickel breaks state scoring record with yet another impressive performance

Tyler Nickel is one of three players in the North Carolina Tar Heels’ 2022 recruiting class, but he stands alone atop the all-time scoring list in the state of Virginia after another sensational performance on Tuesday night.

Nickel, a 6-foot-8, 210-pound power forward from Elkton, Virginia, who’s already had multiple 40 and 50-point games this season, scored 37 points in a 60-51 victory over Strasburg. That increased his career scoring total to 2,804, topping the previous record of 2,801 set by former Gate City standout and current South Bay Lakers guard Mac McClung.

Nickel tied and broke the record on his 34th and 35th points of the night, respectively, which came on a breakaway dunk in the fourth quarter of the tightly contested game. It was then that the raucous fans of East Rockingham began to celebrate Nickel’s feat, giving him a lengthy standing ovation as he hugged his parents and coaches and set aside the ball that went through the hoop to notch the new record.

Nickel, the No. 81 recruit in the class of 2022, went on to sink two free throws late in the game, further sealing the victory for his team who now has a date with Madison County in the semifinals of the Region 2B Tournament on Friday night.

When Nickel takes the court then and for the rest of the season, he’ll be doing something he’s been doing the entire season: building onto a record that already has his name attached to it.
