UNC Basketball: What Hubert Davis stands to earn from tournament berth
If the UNC basketball program makes it to the NCAA Tournament, first-year head coach Hubert Davis stands to earn some serious cash.
Whether or not the North Carolina Tar Heels make it to this year’s NCAA Tournament is yet to be seen, as they’ve struggled through their first season since former head coach and Hall-of-Famer Roy Williams walked away from the game.
Despite the fact that they’ve racked up 20 wins to just eight losses this season — a record that appears solid on the surface — the Tar Heels likely have some work to do in order to punch their ticket to the big dance. That’s because they’ve been blown out by nearly every ranked team they’ve faced this season and lack quality wins against good opponents.
That’s a bad combination for the Tar Heels as we approach the final week of the regular season and one that could leave them on the outside looking in when the field of 68 is announced on Selection Sunday.
However, if the Tar Heels do make it into the tourney, their first-year head coach stands to earn some serious cash on top of his $1.75 million annual salary. Davis’ list of incentives includes $25,000 for making it into the NCAA Tournament, $75,000 for the Round of 32 and the Sweet 16, $200,000 for the Elite Eight and the Final Four and $250,000 for winning a national championship.
Other incentives available to Davis as stated in the terms of his contract with the school include $25,000 for being named ACC Coach of the Year and $50,000 apiece for winning the ACC regular season title and the ACC Tournament championship — all three of which seem rather unlikely given what we’ve seen to this point in the season.
Still, they’re milestones that UNC fans would like to see Davis reach in the near future, and there’s a belief among those close to the program that he will. Despite fans’ waning support of him over the first year of his head coaching tenure in Chapel Hill, the university and athletic department, in particular, think that it’s well within Davis’ wheelhouse.
