The UNC women’s basketball team lost to the Virginia Tech Hokies on Sunday and then fell one spot to No. 24 in the Associated Press Top 25 poll released Monday.

The North Carolina Tar Heels fell to the Virginia Tech Hokies on Sunday afternoon in a hard-fought 66-61 loss at Cassell Coliseum in Blacksburg. It was the Tar Heels’ first loss in the last four games and cost them some position in a competitive Atlantic Coast Conference race.

The Hokies have won consecutive games against ranked opponents — No. 11 Georgia Tech three days prior to their victory against North Carolina — and four straight overall. They’re 11-3 in the ACC and just 2.5 games back of first-place NC State.

The Tar Heels, now 19-5 overall and 9-5 in league play, also fell one spot to No. 24 in the updated Associated Press Top 25 poll that was released on Monday. North Carolina was riding a three-game win streak when they received 136 poll points last week. They received just 63 this week.

Things don’t get any easier for North Carolina in the coming weeks as they now prepare for a home matchup with No. 3 Louisville, a pair of road games against Florida State and Virginia and their season finale against rival Duke at Carmichael Arena.

The Tar Heels are still fourth in the NET rankings, 13th in the Massey Ratings and 22nd in RPI, so they’re in a good position to get into the NCAA Tournament less than a month from now. A win over the 22-2 Cardinals on Thursday night would certainly bolster the Tar Heels’ tournament resume, though they haven’t had much luck against ranked opponents this season (1-4).

North Carolina and Louisville tip-off at 6:00 p.m. EST on Thursday night at Carmichael Arena.
