The race for a top five-star recruit in the 2023 cycle continues on and the UNC Basketball program appears to be right in the middle of it.

Five-star forward G.G. Jackson is North Carolina’s top recruiting target at the moment as Hubert Davis and his staff are hoping to pair him with fellow five-star commit Simeon Wilcher in that 2023 class. And while UNC might still be considered the favorite in the recruitment, other programs are trying to make a late push.

Jackson visited Duke last weekend for his first official visit for the program and while the Blue Devils had some ground to make up you can never count them out of any recruitment for a prospect. Another team that is making a late push is in-state South Carolina, a program that has made it known to Jackson that he can stay in the state and make a big impact for the future of the Gamecocks program. And now, Jackson is set for his official visit there.

Per the Charlotte Observer, Jackson is now set to visit South Carolina on the weekend of Feb. 4-6:

"The five-star Ridge View High School basketball junior prospect originally was going to visit the Gamecocks on Feb. 18-20, but that has been pushed up a few weeks to Feb. 4-6 when USC hosts Tennessee. That weekend worked better with Jackson’s schedule."

This switch is significant for UNC because he will NOT be on camps when the Tar Heels host Duke on February 5th in the Dean Dome. That game is always one of the top games for recruits to attend as UNC can show off the electric atmosphere to recruits. Getting Jackson on campus again soon would help UNC’s chances and while that hasn’t been ruled out, that weekend would have been a prime opportunity.

The reason for the switch is that Jackson’s high school team has the weekend off while they could play a playoff game on the originally scheduled weekend. This will be the fourth official visit for the recruit and one more could be coming down the line, but it does appear we are closer to a decision.

Jackson’s father, Greg Jackson Sr., also told the Observer that they want to have a decision made before he starts his senior year.
