UNC Basketball Recruiting: This 2024 prospect continues to hear from UNC
By Zack Pearson
While the UNC basketball program continues navigating a tough 2021-22 season in Atlantic Coast Conference play, the focus on recruiting hasn’t gone away. The Tar Heels are in pursuit of a few big targets in the 2023 class led by five-star forward G.G. Jackson but they are also starting to do their homework in the 2024 class as well.
As it stands right now, UNC has just one offer out in the 2024 cycle with in-state forward Jarin Stevenson landing that offer. But that could change very soon as Hubert Davis and his staff have their eyes on a few more prospects in that class.
Among them is small forward Drake Powell, a player that has family ties to the university and is currently a sophomore at Northwood High School. Powell is a player that has seen his stock increase over the past few months with his strong play and teams are starting to notice. And one of those teams is North Carolina.
Powell has just one offer so far in his recruitment, landing it from N.C. State but now he’s hearing from two other in-state programs including UNC. Here is what Powell told Jamie Shaw of On3 about his recruitment:
"“We are hearing from UNC and UNC-Greensboro,” Powell said. “I will be looking for a program where I can be myself, and they have like a family atmosphere. Location won’t matter.”"
This is certainly good news for UNC fans in terms of going after prospects in the 2024 class that are in their own backyard. Recruiting for future classes will be key to Hubert Davis’ success and Powell is a prospect that UNC would love to have.
Powell’s father played baseball at North Carolina while both of his siblings also play collegiate sports.
