The UNC basketball program is coming off one of their toughest losses of the season, dropping a road contest at Miami by 30. While UNC looks to get on track with a date against Wake Forest on Saturday, it’s never too early to look at the future of the program.

And that starts with the 2022 recruiting class.

Hubert Davis was able to land a four-man class that was once inside the Top 5 this past Summer but has recently fallen to No. 12 overall. It’s a class that features guard Seth Trimble, forwards Tyler Nickel and Jalen Washington as well as center Will Shaver who is already on campus and has joined the team as an early enrollment.

As we sit here in January, 247Sports has updated their 2022 recruiting rankings for the first time in months. While there was a lot of movement in the rankings, UNC prospects barely saw any movement.

Trimble still leads the way in terms of best player in UNC’s class ranking No. 27 overall as a four-star recruit with a grade of 97. The Wisconsin native has had a monster senior season so far but did not see a boost in his ranking.

Nickel was UNC’s biggest mover, jumping just three spots from No. 79 to No. 76 after he is also off to a great start in his senior season. He’s also the No. 19 small forward in this 2022 class.

Finally, Washington moved one spot from No. 48 to No. 47 despite missing his entire senior season so far with an injury. The four-star recruit has a 95 overall grade and is ranked as the No. 2 player in the state of Indiana.

Shaver was NOT included as he is an early enrollee right now.

As for UNC’s team ranking, 247Sports has them at No. 9 overall but the composite ranking which factors in other sites has them sitting at No. 12. There is still time for these players to shift in the rankings before the final edition is published but UNC should feel good about the way Nickel and Trimble have been playing lately.
