Hubert Davis vowed that it would never happen again for the UNC Basketball program following a blowout loss to Kentucky back in December. In that game, the Tar Heels lacked effort, played poorly and had no leadership on the floor.

Fast forward to Tuesday night in Miami and that exact thing happened, again.

The Tar Heels were drubbed in Miami against one of the best teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference, falling behind early by double digits and never recovering. It was ugly for the Tar Heels who drop to 4-2 in conference play and the loss showed that maybe they aren’t ready to be in contention for the top spot in the conference just yet.

Following the game, there was a lot of criticism directed the team’s way and rightfully so. But one quote stood out to us from Davis’ post-game presser and it’s a damning quote about the state of his team.

Davis was asked about the lack of leadership and offered up this harsh, but true answer about his team and no one stepping up as a leader. Here is the quote via Inside Carolina:

“That’s a great question. I don’t know. I don’t know. I told them in the huddle, that irregardless of what is going on in this game, and in certain games, whatever has happened in the past that they cannot get me to change my mind, me thinking that this team can be really good. I truly believe that. But why is the team missing that? That’s a great question. I don’t know but it is needed, immediately.”

The Tar Heels have lacked this leadership for the entire season and it’s shown, especially in losses for this team. It’s clear no one has stepped into the role for whatever reason and that’s a bit of a problem.

This is a young team but they do have upperclassmen in Armando Bacot, Leaky Black and Brady Manek to go to. So why hasn’t anyone stepped up yet? Just like Davis said, “I don’t know.”

Things better change soon or it could be an even rockier season in Chapel Hill.
