UNC Basketball Recruiting: Hubert Davis checks in on Tar Heels commit
By Zack Pearson
Hubert Davis is off to a good start in terms of recruiting in his first year as head coach of the UNC basketball program.
Davis is set to turn in an impressive four-man class for 2022 that should be ranked in the top 10 when the cycle is complete. For 2023, he’s also been able to get off to a good start landing a commitment from five-star guard Simeon Wilcher.
The Roselle, New Jersey native pledged his commitment to North Carolina back on Late Night With Hubert Davis in October. Since then, Wilcher has kept his commitment to UNC solid and he’s off to a hell of a start in his junior season. Wilcher dropped a triple-double and then followed it up with a double-double last week, making some headlines here in early January.
And on Tuesday, Davis went to check in with Wilcher himself.
Per Kevin Connelly of D1MediaPro and Ball Durham, Davis was in to watch Wilcher play as the recruit dropped 20 points in the win over Elizabeth High School:
It’s good to see Davis out on the recruiting trail and checking in on what is a very important recruit for UNC moving forward. Wilcher is the first commitment in 2023 and UNC is hoping to pair him with G.G. Jackson to give them an elite combo and a good class.
The 6-foot-4, 185-pound combo guard is ranked No. 14 overall, No. 3 combo guard, and No. 3 player in the state of New Jersey per the 247Sports rankings.
With Wilcher’s hot stretch here in his junior season, he could see his rank increase before he steps foot on Chapel Hill for the Tar Heels. That would be great news for Davis and his 2023 class as well.
