UNC Basketball Recruiting: Tar Heels commit Simeon Wilcher is ON FIRE
Class of 2023 UNC basketball recruit Simeon Wilcher is playing at an incredibly high level this season, as evidenced by his recent triple-double.
The Tar Heels got off to a good start with the class of 2023 when they got a commitment from five-star combo guard Simeon Wilcher.
Wilcher, regarded as one of the nation’s best players at his position, gave his pledge to North Carolina head coach Hubert Davis in mid-October approximately two years before he’ll play his first official game with the program. That’ll give him time to improve on his already budding game, one that features an incredibly versatile skillset that’s equally matched by his athleticism and savvy.
We’ve seen it all on full display over the past couple of months, as the 6-foot-4, 185-pound junior from Roselle Catholic is averaging absolutely insane numbers to this point of the season. Through his first seven games, Wilcher is averaging 18.1 points, 8.4 assists and 6.7 rebounds.
Wilcher’s most impressive performance of the season came last Tuesday in an 80-47 win over Plainfield when he notched a triple-double with 14 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists. He didn’t stop there, though, as he came back four days later with 15 points, 13 assists and six rebounds in a lopsided 96-28 victory over Union Catholic.
It’s still unknown what exactly Wilcher’s role with the Tar Heels will be when he arrives on campus a year-and-a-half from now. Will he be a backup to 2022 UNC commit Seth Trimble? Will Wilcher and Trimble play in tandem similarly to the way that Caleb Love and R.J. Davis currently do? We simply do not know at this point, but he’ll be a difference-maker in one way or another.
A consensus five-star recruit, Wilcher is No. 14 overall in the class of 2023 according to the 247Sports Composite. He’s third among combo guards in the class and in the state of New Jersey. He’s ranked similarly in the Rivals150 at No. 15 and even higher in the ESPN100 at No. 12.
