UNC Football Recruiting: Tar Heels might not be done adding to 2022 class
By Zack Pearson
Mack Brown and the UNC football staff signed a 17-player 2022 class during the early signing period which ranked 8th in the nation. With those 17 players signed, the plan was for UNC to turn to the transfer portal to fill in some voids on their roster.
But as the weeks have gone on, UNC might not be done adding to that already impressive class.
With just under a month until national signing day, North Carolina is one of the teams involved for a rising defensive tackle in the 2022 class. And they may have a legit chance at landing him, making him the 18th player in their 2022 class.
Three-star defensive lineman Ahmad Moten out of Flordia didn’t have a single offer at the start of 2021. But since then, his play has elevated and so has the number of offers from programs which currently stands at over 20. Among the teams that have shown interest recently is North Carolina, a program that Moten has included in his top five along with Iowa State, Miami, Tennessee, and Oklahoma.
The South Florida product talked to Sports Illustrated’s Matt Ray about the surge in his recruitment and where things stand right now. Here is what he said about the UNC program and their involvement:
"Coach Cross came down here the first week in December and wanted to talk to me. When he came down, I could tell, that is one of those D-lineman coaches that I can talk to him about anything. Him not even talking about football and wanting to get to know me and see how I am as a person and taking his time to come and see me meant a lot. Then the people he has developed, I want to be one of those guys, so that is why UNC made the top five. Then Coach Cross is just a cool dude, he is faithful, and I can tell he is a good man.”"
Moten does have visits scheduled in the coming weeks, including one to UNC. And he plans on making his decision on national signing day.
But it appears as if UNC does have ground to make up as the Sooners currently hold the 247Sports crystal ball prediction lead early in January.
