Stop if you’ve heard this before, a recruit calls the UNC basketball program his dream school. It’s not uncommon for it to happen to North Carolina or any other school that’s considered a Blue Blood program.

And it happened again for UNC with an intriguing in-state 2024 prospect.

Small Forward Drake Powell is an under-the-radar recruit out of Pittsboro, North Carolina just down the road a bit from Chapel Hill. While Powell hasn’t gained a ton of national attention just yet, he’s starting to get traction locally which should result in more coming from across the country.

The 6-foot-5, 170-pound Powell is already one of the top players in the state and his recruitment is starting to pick up a bit here as the calendar shifts to 2022. Powell has a total of one offer with that coming from N.C. State but most recently, UNC has visited him at practice and is starting to show a lot of interest.

Powell recently talked to Travis Branham of 247Sports to get the latest on his recruitment and which teams are showing interest. In the article, Powell mentions UNC and calls them one of his dream schools.

"On North Carolina, Powell grew up following the Tar Heels as his father played baseball there in college and he now considers it a dream school“I think it’s great,” Powell described of his thoughts on UNC. “Roy Williams was a great coach and he built a strong platform for Hubert Davis to take over. Coach Davis came to one of our practices but no one has reached out to me on the phone.”"

As mentioned above, Powell has a connection to the university as his father played third base for the baseball program. He does come from a very athletic family with his brother playing college ball at Louisburg College and his sister plays volleyball at Virginia Tech. His mother also played basketball growing up.

Powell has made strides in his game over the past year and should continue to get better as UNC’s interest will increase. There are currently no rankings on 247Sports for the 2024 class but expect to see his name on there when those debut.
