UNC Basketball Recruiting: Tar Heels commit stands out at HoopHall event
By Zack Pearson
With the calendar about to flip to 2022, ’tis the season for holiday tournaments in the high school basketball world and already one UNC basketball commit is standing out.
Popular events like the John Wall Invitational and HoopHall events are taking place this week and players from across the country are participating including some of the elites. But one prospect is really standing out at the HoopHall East event, Slam Dunk at the Beach, and it happens to be good news for fans of North Carolina.
Class of 2023 five-star guard Simeon Wilcher is one of the standouts so far at the event and he’s coming off back-to-back days of big performances. Wilcher dropped 25 points dished out 4 assists, grabbed 4 rebounds and had 3 steals in Roselle Catholic’s 85-65 win over Woodrow Wilson on Monday.
He then followed it up with another 25-point performance on Tuesday with 7 assists in a win over Gray Collegiate out of North Carolina. It was a big back-to-back performance from Wilcher who even gained some attention from NBA draft analyst Jonathan Wasserman.
The 6-foot-4, 185-pound combo guard out of New Jersey is UNC’s first commit of the 2023 class, pledging his verbal with a surprise commitment at Late Night With Roy in October. Wilcher is ranked No. 14 overall, No. 3 combo guard, and the No. 3 player in the state of New Jersey.
But with play like this Wilcher will certainly continue to climb up the recruiting rankings and should find himself as a Top 10 player in the class soon enough. That would bode well for UNC’s class as they are also in the hunt for five-star and rising prospect G.G. Jackson, hoping to pair the duo for the future.
