UNC Basketball: Theo Pinson finds new home in NBA
By Zack Pearson
Former fan favorite and UNC basketball standout Theo Pinson has a new home with an NBA franchise after missing the start of this season.
Per multiple reports, the forward is set to sign with the Dallas Mavericks on a 10-day contract under the COVID-related hardship allowance. With the Mavericks roster hit hard with COVID-19 protocols, the Mavericks have decided to add the forward to the roster.
The 26-year-old Pinson has played in 68 games in his NBA career after going undrafted in the 2018 NBA Draft following a four-year career with the Tar Heels.
Pinson has previously spent time with the Brooklyn Nets and New York Knicks. Most recently, Pinson has been with the Maine Red Claws, the G-League affiliate of the Boston Celtics this season.
In 12 games with the Red Claws, Pinson is averaging 16.4 points, 4.4 assists, 4.6 rebounds, and 1.3 steals. He’s been averaging 32 minutes per game and has been a key role player for the Red Claws.
Dallas recently lost Reggie Bullock and Josh Green who are both out with COVID-19 and at the very least, Pinson gets the chance to get some playing time and potentially impress the Mavericks.
Pinson averaged a career high 10.3 points, 5.1 assists and 5.0 rebounds per game in his senior season for the Tar Heels in 2017-18. The year before that, Pinson was a key piece to UNC’s title team, helping them return to the Final Four and eventually win it all after beating Gonzaga.
