Hubert Davis’ first true recruiting class as head coach of the UNC basketball program is set to be a good one as the 2022 cycle churned out four commitments and what should be a top 10 class when it’s all said and done.

UNC was able to land three four-star recruits and a three-star recruit in the cycle and all are expected to have an impact sooner than later. But before they get on campus a few of those recruits are impressing in their final high school seasons.

Among them is four-star forward Tyler Nickel, a Virginia native that picked the Tar Heels over Virginia Tech, Iowa and other offers in his recruitment. The East Rockingham product is off to a good start this season and now he’s reached a milestone less than a month into his final year.

Nickel scored 37 points on Tuesday night in a win over Mountain View and in the process hit the 2,000-point mark, finishing the night at 2,001.

By hitting the mark, Nickel is now the 55th player in Virginia Sports League history to hit that mark for their career. That list includes names that Nickel could catch before his career is over: Grant Hill (South Lakes) – 2,028 points, Alonzo Mourning (Indian River) – 2,105 points, Moses Malone (Petersburg) – 2,124 points, J.J. Redick (Cave Spring) – 2,214 points.

Former Georgetown and Texas Tech guard Mac McClung owns the record with 2,801 points.

Nickel continues to elevate his game as the year goes on and that’s great news for Tar Heels fans before he arrives on campus.
