UNC Basketball News: Hawaii, North Carolina announce 2024 matchup
The UNC basketball program will travel to Honolulu in 2024 to take on the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors for the first time in eight years.
The University of North Carolina and the University of Hawaii have agreed to play a game on November 22, 2024, at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center in Honolulu. This comes after the teams’ previously scheduled game set for November of 2020 was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
"“We’re extremely happy to have North Carolina back on our non-conference schedule,” head coach Eran Ganot told khon2. “Last season, they were the jewel of one of our best non-conference schedules in years. COVID dealt us an unfortunate hand and we’re continuing to navigate through it, but it’s great to get ahead on future schedules. Our student-athletes get to compete against one of the game’s elite programs and I’m thrilled for our fans who always come out in full force to support us. I’m sure the electricity at the SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center will be off the charts.”"
It will be the first time that the two programs have met since a November 2016 matchup at the same venue that saw the Tar Heels win by a final score of 83-68. North Carolina, who went on to win the national title that season, got a team-high 16 points from senior forward Isaiah Hicks, as well as 13 points apiece from fellow seniors Kennedy Meeks and Nate Britt.
The Tar Heels have played the Rainbow Warriors on five occasions, four of which took place in Honolulu. They’ve walked away victorious in all five previous meetings with Hawaii by an average margin of victory of 15.8 points. Similar to their 2016 meeting and subsequent national championship, the Tar Heels saw success following a pair of their previous meetings with the Big West Conference school. In 1994, it was an 88-76 victory en route to the 1995 Final Four. Two years prior, Hawaii suffered a 101-84 defeat to the eventual 1993 national champion Tar Heels.
