The season got off to a good start for the UNC Basketball program, moving to 3-0 this past week with a win over College of Charleston. But the competition got tougher for Hubert Davis and his team over the weekend, presenting their biggest challenges yet.

After UNC went 0-2 with losses to Purdue and Tennessee over the weekend at the Hall of Fame Tip-off Classic, North Carolina has not only fallen to 3-2 on the year but they are out of the latest Associated Press Top 25 rankings.

UNC falls from No. 18 to unranked and receiving 75 votes as they are now on the outside looking in. It’s disappointing, but seeing how UNC played against two ranked teams, this was expected for the Tar Heels.

No. 1 Gonzaga and No. 2 UCLA held serve in the rankings while Purdue moved up to No. 3, Kansas falling to No. 4, and Duke climbing to No. 5 in the latest poll.. Baylor (No. 6), Villanova (No. 7),  Texas (No. 8), Memphis (No. 9) and Kentucky (No.10), round out that top 10 in this week’s poll.

As for the Atlantic Coast Conference, it’s another ugly week. Duke is the only team from the conference that is ranked in the poll with the Tar Heels dropping out. Virginia Tech (91), UNC (75), and Florida State (4) all received votes.

UNC’s climb back into the Top 25 won’t be an easy one. They play UNC-Asheville this week for their lone game then return to action on December 1, hosting No. 20 Michigan who is also 3-2 after two upset losses. The Tar Heels still have No. 2 UCLA on their non-conference schedule as well this season.

Right now, the goal for Davis and his team is to stack some wins before conference play gets going in hopes of building their confidence for the rest of the way.
