UNC Football: Ty Chandler has historic day in Tar Heels’ upset win
By Zack Pearson
The UNC Football program took a big step forward in terms of reaching a bowl game this year with their 58-55 upset win over Wake Forest on Saturday. Going into that game, UNC needed to win two of their last four with three of those games being against ranked opponents.
With a game left against Wofford, we should assume UNC will reach a bowl game and that was in large part due to the effort of one player on offense on Saturday. Running back Ty Chandler.
The former Tennessee standout had his best game with UNC and it was a historic day for the running back in the win. Chandler rushed for 213 yards on 22 carries and had four touchdowns to help power UNC’s offense.
With that performance, Chandler is in some elite company. Per 247Sports, Chandler became just the third player to have 200+ rush yards and four rushing touchdowns in a game against a College Football Playoff Top 10 team, joining only Ezekiel Elliott and John Rhys Plumlee:
That’s some impressive company especially with Elliott being a top 5 pick in the NFL Draft after that big performance against Oregon.
Chandler opted to transfer to North Carolina following a few seasons in Tennessee and he made his impact felt right away. With North Carolina losing Javonte Williams and Michael Carter, they needed someone to step up and Chandler has done that. He’s up to 884 rushing yards and 13 rushing touchdowns on the year while also catching 13 passes for 188 yards and a touchdown.
The back appears to be hitting his stride here late in the season and could be a key component to UNC making a run to close out these final three regular season games and a bowl appearance.
