Former UNC basketball point guard Cole Anthony poured in 24 points for the Orlando Magic in a 120-111 loss to the Charlotte Hornets.

Cole Anthony scored a team-high 24 points for the Orlando Magic in a 120-111 home loss to the red-hot Charlotte Hornets on Wednesday night. He hit just two of his seven attempts from three-point range, but 11-of-20 shots for the game. He also pulled down five rebounds and dished out six assists in 35 minutes of play.

It’s the second time in the last three games that Anthony has scored more than 20 points, the other being the 29-point, 16 rebound performance he put on the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden on Sunday. He’s recorded no less than four assists in any one game this season, and has at least five rebounds in four of five contests.

Sure, Anthony has been streaky and inconsistent to begin his second professional season, but he’s still averaging 17 points, 7.4 rebounds and 5.8 assists through the team’s first five games. His 41.3 percent accuracy from the floor isn’t where he wants it to be, but it is north of his 39.7 percent mark from a season ago. On the other hand, his three-point shooting percentage has dropped from 33.7 percent as a rookie to 31.4 percent this season.

Regardless, the second-year point guard out of North Carolina looks better overall, and is still showing his potential — albeit inconsistent — to be a star in the NBA. And one thing is absolutely certain: when Cole Anthony is on, he’s really on.
