The UNC basketball program faced off with the Florida Gators on Saturday in a friendly preseason tune-up.

The North Carolina Tar Heels officially begin their 2021-22 season with an exhibition game against Elizabeth City State two Fridays from now, followed by their first regular season contest the Tuesday after that. They got an early preseason warm-up over the weekend, though, in the form of a scrimmage against the Florida Gators.

First-year head coach Hubert Davis and his team traveled to Gainesville, Florida for the friendly matchup, one that helped him tinker with different lineups, see who plays well together and get a feel for what his new-look squad might be capable of this season. And while we don’t have an excess of details about the scrimmage — both programs agreed to keep the details of the event private — we do know that he was able to do just that.

We also know that the Tar Heels played much better in the second half than they did the first, and that sophomore power forward Dawson Garcia did not participate for an undisclosed reason. As you can see in the above highlight reel of Saturday’s matchup, Caleb Love hit some shots from beyond the three-point line, something we’ve all been hoping would become a more consistent weapon in his arsenal.

We’re also under the impression that junior center Armando Bacot had a big game, and the video footage seems to confirm that. He was dominant in the paint, active on the glass and effective scoring the basketball. And perhaps the most interesting thing that we’ve heard is the use of R.J. Davis at the point guard position with Caleb Love playing off the ball as the two-guard. That’s definitely something to keep an eye on in the early-goings of the season.

We’re excited for the start of the college basketball season, and we’ll be there with you for every game beginning in just over a week.
