The UNC football program has been underwhelming this season, and more disappointment has hit.

Before the season started, wide receiver Khafre Brown was on the watch list of potential break-out players. Now Brown is still being watched, but on a different list as he recently announced that he would be throwing his talents in the transfer portal to search for a fresh start. The news has many UNC fans wondering one thing: What went wrong?

Many things can attribute to Brown entering his name in the transfer portal. The biggest has to come down to playing time, which Brown hasn’t a lot of — not getting the opportunity to run routes as often as many expected. Brown has only had an impact on one game this season, in which he caught one reception for a 75-yard touchdown in the 59-39 victory over the Virginia Cavaliers.

Brown’s lack of playing time could have contributed to his drops this season, and his inability to stand out in a loaded wide receiver position. The final straw for Brown could be the fact that he didn’t play a snap against the Miami Hurricanes last weekend, or how lackluster the offense has been this season. Throw in the fact that Sam Howell could be on his way to the NFL draft after this year, and the possible reasons behind Brown’s decision make more sense.

Brown is a sophomore looking to join his older brother Dyami Brown in the NFL, and to do so, he will need to have his cleats on the field and not on the bench. His speed is still a factor and, despite the lack of throws his way this season, you can believe he will get targeted in the transfer portal.
