UNC Basketball 2021-2022 Player Preview: Dontrez Styles
Our UNC Basketball player previews continue on with another freshman in Dontrez Styles, the first to commit to the 2021 class
The Kinston, North Carolina native is one of two members of the Tar Heels’ freshman class joining D’Marco Dunn. The small forward has a bit of a throwback element to his game, using his athleticism and plays above the rim.
The 6-foot-6, 210-pound Dontrez Styles is the latest talent to come out of Kinston, an area that has produced Jerry Stackhouse, Cedric Maxwell, Reggie Bullock and Brandon Ingram over the years.
Now, he’s hoping to create his own legacy at North Carolina.
What to Expect in 2021-2022
Although Styles is a highly touted athletic scorer, he is a solid defender as well. With his size, expect Styles to play both forward positions at UNC similar to how Nassir Little was used during his lone year at North Carolina. His skill set is reminiscent of J.P. Tokoto and fits in well with Hubert Davis’ offense.
In addition, do not be surprised if this young man posterizes someone on a fast break or while driving to the basket. He has a subtle first step and he is deceivingly quick. Styles does not shy away from body contact and he goes “hard in the paint.” He has a preference for mid-range shots.
North Carolina has a deep rotation this season and it will be difficult for some players to crack it consistently. I do not see Styles having that problem. He is an unselfish player who has a huge motor. Every team needs a player like this young man. When a defensive stop is needed, Styles is the type of player who is going to block a shot, get a key rebound or dive out of bounds to save the ball. Styles has the killer instinct that will cause UNC head coach Hubert Davis to call his number repeatedly.
Bold Prediction
I think that Styles will be the third or fourth player off the bench. However, this will depend on the matchup. Styles will battle Leaky Black, Puff Johnson and Justin McKoy for minutes at both forward positions.
This is a great problem to have for a team – depth at each position. Expect Styles to be an energy guy off the bench. He will be instrumental in providing a spark for the second team. Once he gets his footing in Chapel Hill, Styles will be a household name on Tobacco Road and beyond.
