UNC field hockey standout Erin Matson has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Week.

Erin Matson, senior forward for the North Carolina Tar Heels field hockey team, has been named the ACC’s Offensive Player of the Week. It’s the second time this season that Matson has been recognized with the honor, and follows an outstanding weekend performance in which she recorded three goals and two assists in helping the Tar Heels beat a pair of top 15 opponents.

In the Tar Heels’ ACC opener against No. 5 Boston College on Friday, Matson scored a goal at the 37:35 mark, extending the North Carolina lead to 5-0. She also assisted on a Jasmina Smolenaars goal at the 17:07 mark. The Tar Heels eventually won the game by a score of 6-1.

Two days later, North Carolina took on 15th-ranked Uconn, and Matson was a factor in each of the Tar Heels’ three goals on the day. She scored her 12th and 13th goals of the season to give UNC a 2-1 lead after trailing early. She assisted Katie Dixon on a goal at the game’s 57:29 mark. The Tar Heels’ 3-1 victory over the Huskies helped them improve to 6-3 on the season.

North Carolina will continue to lean on Matson, a 5-foot-4 native of Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, for the remainder of the season. She’s proven to be one of the best in the nation, and any deep run this season will have her right at the center of it.

Matson and the Tar Heels have games at No. 11 Syracuse on Friday, and at Albany on Sunday.
