Sophomore forward Justin McKoy throws down a dunk on freshman guard D’Marco Dunn during UNC basketball practice

The North Carolina Tar Heels are in their first week of practice in preparation for the 2021-22 college basketball season, and we’ve already seen some fireworks at the Dean Smith Center.

The team held its second practice on Wednesday, and it was open to the media. Those in attendance got to see an outstanding dunk by one UNC newcomer against another, as sophomore forward and Virginia transfer Justin McKoy put freshman shooting guard D’Marco Dunn on a poster.

During an intra-squad scrimmage, sophomore wing Puff Johnson pulled down a rebound and quickly put the ball on the floor and started the fast break. After passing the opposing three-point line, Johnson dished the ball to McKoy setting up an opportunity for a spectacular finish. And finish he did. McKoy rose up and slammed it home over Dunn in the most explosive play of the day.

Now, North Carolina fans are hoping that McKoy’s high-rising dunk is a sign of things to come. We’ll soon find out, as McKoy should get plenty of playing time off the UNC bench when the season begins in early November. The Tar Heels’ season begins with a game against Loyola in Chapel Hill. Expect McKoy to be a difference-maker for the Tar Heels early on in his first season with North Carolina.
