With the UNC Basketball program likely being done in the 2022 recruiting cycle, the focus now shifts over to the 2023 class. Head coach Hubert Davis is set to turn in what is currently a Top 5 class for 2022, the first class since he took over for Roy Williams.
And while he has a good four-man class, building on that will be key.
North Carolina has yet to land a commitment in 2023 but it’s still early so there’s no reason to panic. Davis and his staff have identified targets including a few big ones so far as they begin to ramp up the pursuit for those recruits. In total, UNC has six offers out to targets in the class as we approach the Fall season.
Among those targets that have an offer is four-star forward Matas Buzelis. The Illinois native transferred to New Hampshire to play at Brewster Academy and hope to up his exposure with a big high school program. So far, UNC has expressed interest in Buzelis and on Tuesday they were on the road to see him.
Per Jake Weingarten of Stockrisers, UNC is among the programs that will visit Buzelis this week:
Joining UNC in the pursuit is Illinois head coach Brand Underwood on Tuesday as well as Duke head coach in waiting Jon Scheyer who will visit on Wednesday. Both UNC and Illinois are among the 10 offers for Buzelis with Duke yet to offer right now.
However, the Blue Devils can’t be counted out in this recruitment and we could eventually be headed for a Blue Blood showdown.
The 6-foot-10, 175-pound Buzelis is ranked No. 23 overall, the No. 7 small forward and the No. 2 player in the state of New Hampshire per the 247Sports recruiting rankings. He’s taken one visit so far which was to Wake Forest in August and has one more planned for Florida State in September. However, if UNC is a legit contender in this recruitment then they should also be getting a visit down the line.
