Following his five-touchdown performance against Georgia State, UNC football’s Sam Howell has been named to the Davey O’Brien Award’s Great 8 list.

Following one of the best performances of his collegiate career, North Carolina quarterback Sam Howell has been named to the Davey O’Brien Award’s Great 8 list for Week 2 of the college football season. Joining Howell on the list are Virginia’s Brennan Armstrong, Gerogia’s Stetson Bennett, Oregon’s Anthony Brown, BYU’s Jaren Hall, Memphis’ Seth Henigan, Stanford’s Tanner McKee and Pittsburgh’s Kenny Pickett.

After a disappointing Week 1 performance from Howell and the Tar Heels in their season-opening loss to the Virginia Tech Hokies, the UNC signal-caller came out and threw for 352 yards on a 21-for-29 passing night against the Panthers. He scored five total touchdowns — three through the air and two on the ground — in a record-setting performance for the Tar Heels.

Along with his tremendous passing game, Howell rushed for 104 yards on 11 carries, and became just the second UNC quarterback to accumulate 300 or more passing yards and at least 100 rushing yards in a single game. He also became just the second UNC quarterback to score three touchdowns through the air and two on the ground in the same game. In both cases, the other UNC quarterback to accomplish the feat was Marquise Williams.

The winner of the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback of the Week will be announced on Wednesday.
