UNC Basketball: Tyler Nickel ready to decide, sets date
By Zack Pearson
The UNC Basketball program will find out their fate in the race for a four-star forward in the 2022 recruiting class. And they will know quickly.
Four-star prospect Tyler Nickel announced on Tuesday that he is set to make his decision and will pledge a commitment to a program on Wednesday afternoon. Nickel will hold a ceremony at East Rockingham High School at 2:45 p.m. Wednesday per Inside Carolina.
The 6-foot-8, 210-pound forward had a total of 18 offers in his recruitment but is set to decide between two schools and it will be an Atlantic Coast Conference battle between North Carolina and Virginia Tech to land him. Nickel has visited both schools this Summer, most recently UNC this past weekend and has apparently seen enough to make a decision.
For North Carolina, they enter Wednesday’s decision as the early favorite according to the 247Sports crystal ball, holding all four predictions so far. The timing of the announcement also favors UNC as it comes just a day after his visit to campus over the weekend.
Hubert Davis and his staff have landed three recruits for their 2022 class so far, the first for the new head coach and landing Nickel would be the icing on the cake. After commitments from Will Shaver, Seth Trimble and Jalen Washington earlier in the Summer, the Tar Heels eventually got their board down to two players in Nickel and Cam Whitmore.
But it appears as if Nickel could be that final piece to close the chapter on the 2022 class.
Nickel is ranked No. 80 overall, the No. 22 small forward and the No. 3 player in the state of Virginia per the 247Sports recruiting rankings.
