UNC Basketball: Tar Heels visiting five-star wing on Tuesday
The UNC basketball program will be visiting five-star small forward Mackenzie Mgbako on Tuesday.
Despite still having a ways to go with their 2022 recruiting class, Hubert Davis and the North Carolina Tar Heels are hard at work on the class of 2023. They’ve already extended a half-dozen scholarship offers to high school juniors, and all but one are of the five-star variety.
One of them is consensus top-20 prospect Mackenzie Mgbako, a 6-foot-7, 185-pound small forward that hails from Gladstone, New Jersey. A standout at Gill St. Bernard School, Mgbako is one of the most coveted recruits in the nation, which is evidenced by a growing offer sheet of nearly 20 schools. Among the star-studded cast of programs after Mgbako are Auburn, Duke, Kentucky, LSU, Maryland, Ohio State, UCLA and Xavier.
The Blue Devils, in particular, got a visit from Mgbako in early September. Kentucky’s John Calipari and company took a trip to see him on Monday. Mgbako also plans to visit Ohio State in the near future, and potentially Penny Hardaway’s Memphis Tigers some time after that. And according to Zagsblog’s Adam Zagoria, Hubert Davis and Jeff Lebo will be in town to visit Mgbako on Tuesday. Mgbako has also hinted at a possible trip to see the Tar Heels in Chapel Hill.
Current, though early, predictions for Mgbako’s future college decision favor the Mike Krzyzewski-less Blue Devils that will be led by now-assistant Jon Scheyer. That includes a pair of Crystal Ball picks from 247Sports insiders, and a FutureCast projection from Cats Illustrated’s Travis Graf. But again, it’s still incredibly early in Mgbako’s recruitment, and anything can happen between now and the time that he makes his decision.
