UNC Basketball: Tar Heels visit top 2023 recruiting target
Hubert Davis and the UNC basketball program remain in hot pursuit of their top 2023 recruiting target, Robert Dillingham.
The North Carolina Tar Heels made yet another visit to class of 2023 point guard Robert Dillingham on Thursday. It’s just the latest in a series of meetings between the two parties that indicates a strong interest on both sides. That’s good news for a North Carolina program that has a fair amount of uncertainty at the lead guard position in the years ahead.
Will current starter Caleb Love return to Chapel Hill following his sophomore season? If he doesn’t, will class of 2022 commit Seth Trimble be prepared to take the reins for the Tar Heels’ high-octane offense moving forward? Is a more seasoned version of R.J. Davis an option at the point guard position? Or maybe current UNC freshman combo guard D’Marco Dunn could fill that role. We simply do not know at this juncture, and won’t have a number of those answers for quite some time.
What we do feel comfortable saying is that the Tar Heels are holding nothing back in their attempts to sign Dillingham, the nation’s No. 2-ranked point guard and 11th overall prospect in his class. Five predictions across Rivals and 247Sports favor the Tar Heels, and have for quite some time. That includes a Crystal Ball pick from 247Sports Director of Basketball Scouting Jerry Meyer dating back to late December, and FutureCast projections from Rivals’ Jamie Shaw and Dan McDonald.
Competition for the 6-foot-1, 160-pound Dillingham is going to be stiff, what with scholarship offers from nearly 20 schools including Auburn, Florida, Kansas, Memphis, NC State, Tennessee and Texas. It’ll be interesting to see who makes Dillingham’s list of finalists, whenever he gets to that point in his recruitment. Expect to see the Tar Heels on said list, along with a number of college basketball’s top programs.
